Denmark has fourth-highest rate of online gambling in Europe
New data from the country’s regulator has shown the popularity of online gambling in Denmark.
Gambling regulator Spillemyndigheden has released data showing that three-fifths (60%) of all betting in the country is now carried out via the internet on smartphones, tablets and computers.
Crypto casino and sportsbook operators are likely to take note of this fact given the 60% ratio towards online gambling places Denmark in fourth place for all of Europe, indicating it could be a useful target for growth. Denmark’s land-based casinos and slots machines were also revealed to have reported a rise in revenue in 2022 when compared to the previous two years.
However, overall the Danish gambling market was revealed over the course of 2022 to have its total gross gambling revenue at DKK10.1bn. As this represents a drop of 2.8% on the previous 12-month period, it could show Danes have slightly cut back on their gambling activity. Danish consumers were shown by the data to spend an average of DKK2,350 on gambling last year.
This means that because Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland all have a higher average, Danes are spending less on gambling per person than any of their Nordic neighbours. Denmark uses a multi-operator licensing system – the same as Sweden – while Finland, Norway and Iceland all have a monopoly system that has led to a significant grey market developing.
Denmark’s data shows 41 operators had a licence for online casino gambling during 2022. Gross gambling revenue from online gambling in Denmark has risen by 184% according to the new data that has been released by the nation’s gambling regulator, Spillemyndigheden. The average reimbursement rate for Denmark’s online casinos in 2022 was shown to be 95.78%.
“Even though the majority of Danes’ gambling takes place online, the Danish Gambling Authority naturally still supervises the land-based gambling market such as casinos and gambling arcades and kiosks, among other places. It is important that the law is complied with, both concerning online and land-based gambling,” said Anders Dorph, the Danish Gambling Authority director, in a statement released alongside the new report.
“I am pleased that every year we can publish ‘The Gambling Market in Numbers’, where we look back on the year that passed in the Danish gambling market. The release gives both us and our stakeholders a really good and useful overview of the current development in many different aspects of the gambling market in Denmark.”
